Functions of Code Switching from Arabic to English among Jordanian Pilots in their Daily Informal Conversations: A Case Study

This study examines the frequency and functions of code switching in informal conversations among Jordanian pilots, who have created their own jargon. It also explores most frequent English expressions that pilots switch to Arabic discourse. The eight aged between thirty fifty-five were tape-recorded three separate natural settings. data used for purpose finding out what pragmatic communicative are pilots’ serves, investigate conversations. results showed main conversational can be identified code-switching routines, namely: compensate lack exact equivalents Arabic, avoid interruption communication when not knowing equivalent, replace long technical terminology with acronyms (acronyms common Arabic), use aviation titles ranks, quote/ directly report phrases speakers, say numbers, refer names companies, places, documents, organizations, insert some formulaic expressions. findings terms amongst more related register than common-core vocabulary.
